The City is expanding opportunities for local artists to showcase their work through an exhibition program in partnership with Albany Entertainment Centre and Harry Riggs Albany Regional Airport.
Following a competitive Expression of Interest process, six exhibitions have been selected to transform public spaces at the airport and entertainment centre with works from talented local artists.
The initiative builds on the City’s established exhibition program at the Albany Town Hall and Vancouver Arts Centre, while responding to demand from the local arts community for exhibition spaces and opportunities.
Manager Arts and Culture Paul Nielsen said the partnership program would provide greater visibility for local artists while enhancing the experience of visitors and residents moving through some of Albany’s busiest public venues.
“This is a really exciting initiative that allows us to bring temporary exhibitions into different spaces across Albany and create more opportunities for local artists to share their work with the community,” he said.
“Artists have told us that there is a need for more exhibition spaces and opportunities, and by working with the Albany Entertainment Centre and Albany Regional Airport we have been able to respond to that need in a meaningful way.
“We are really excited to bring quality local art into these high-profile venues and look forward to seeing how the community and visitors engage with the exhibitions.”
The first two exhibitions are now open to the public.
At the airport, Denmark artist Corinna Ossinger presents Branches, a collection of striking gouache paintings celebrating local birdlife and the natural environment of the Great Southern.
Meanwhile, at the Albany Entertainment Centre, Albany artist Katherine Taylor debuts her first public exhibition, No Village, Still Here, a thought-provoking collection exploring themes of connection, identity and belonging.
Both exhibitions will remain on display until mid-June during regular operating hours at each venue, with two further exhibitions scheduled to follow at both locations through until September.
