Youth Songwriting + Music Industry Masterclass with Chey Jordan

12 May 2024 | Albany Town Hall

Learn how to write music for a living and understand the ins-and-outs of the music industry at this four-hour workshop for young songwriters and musicians aged 13 to 17.

From over 2.5 million views online to being number 4 on the Triple J Unearthed charts for 3 weeks straight, Chey Jordan and his band take some time out of their national Australian tour to support and upskill emerging musicians of the Great Southern region.

The Australian music scene is a complex industry - from getting your first gig to releasing your first song, it’s a profession that doesn’t follow any strict rules. With the rise of social media, production accessibility and music streaming, the methods of gaining an audience have changed in comparison to previous decades - but how can someone with no network or connections get their start?

Participants will learn the basics of recording and performance and be introduced to the foundations of the music business.

  • Compose your own original basic demos and song concepts.
  • Recognise the importance of having a local music scene and its benefits to Australia.
  • Write professional cold/warm emails for booking your own gigs or being a support act for another artist (templates provided).
  • Understand how to use online national music resources to gain recognition and earn an income (APRA AMCOS and Triple J Unearthed).
  • Create new projects in Ableton Live, import sounds to sample and design your own tracks.
  • Learn to record with the minimum essentials (i.e. iPhone microphones, free software, donated music instruments – you don’t need the best gear for a great sounding song!).
  • Gain insight into how to collaborate with other musicians from different backgrounds.
  • Recognise the importance of acknowledging the traditional owners of the land on which we create music/art and paying respects whenever performing/recording.
  • Comprehend slang and jargon from the music industry, especially when booking gigs (i.e. a ‘hold’ on a date, ‘guarantee fees’ etc.).

This workshop will be held in the upstairs auditorium at Albany Town Hall, a recently refurbished performance space with a regular original live music program, and will include information about how to access upcoming performance opportunities at the venue.
