VANCOUVER ARTS CENTRE ACCESSIBILITY
Disclaimer: The Vancouver Arts Centre is a heritage listed building. Modifications have been made to allow better access to and around the building, however there are some areas of the original design that are not fully accessible. Please discuss personal needs with the centre staff to assist with accessibility.
There is a single ACROD parking bay which is located at the western side of the centre, via the driveway off Vancouver Street. The parking bay is brick paved, has uneven surfaces in places with possible trip hazards and has a slight gradient. There is a wide area of paving to traverse from the ACROD parking bay to access the front entrance. The distance is approximately 30m.
There is a set down and pick up area in front of the centre on Vancouver Street. The area consists of three turn off bays which is approximately 10m - 30m from the front entrance. The access way to the front entrance is paved and uneven in some places.
During office hours, the timber front door is open. The doorway is 96cm wide and has an airlock with an automatic double door. There is step free access into the front entrance.
The main parking area (not ACROD) is at the rear of the centre, accessible via the driveway between the centre and Mary Thomson House. The carpark is brick paved with some bitumen areas and is uneven in places. No seating or handrails are available between the carpark and the centre rear entrance.
There are two pathways to access the centre rear entrance from the carpark.
The brick paved pathway (western side) has a smooth transition from the carpark to path. The gradient is steep (greater than 1 in 3), undulating and leads to 8 timber stairs at the rear entrance. At the top is a wide landing and a single step up into the rear entrance which has automatic double doors.
The aggregate concrete pathway (eastern side) is a smooth, steep gradient (greater than 1 in 3), leading to a wide timber ramp with a timber handrail along the entire length. The surface is fitted with non-slip strips. The ramp leads to a wide landing, a single step up into the rear entrance which has automatic double doors.
The ground floor of the centre has wide hallways, is step free and is surfaced with a mix of timber and low loop pile carpet. At the eastern end of the building there is a slight level change of gradient leading to the Weavers and Art rooms. The upper level of the centre is only accessible via a wide staircase (two sets of ten steps with a small landing in between) made of timber with a balustrade on the left-hand side. The upper level contains two studio spaces.
The centre has one wheelchair for visitor use.
Trained Guide or Assistant Animals are welcome.
