City look for new artist in residence

Visiting artists who want to showcase the heritage, environment, community or culture of our region are invited to apply for an Artist in Residence position with the Vancouver Arts Centre’s program.

Up to six visiting artists will be granted a position within the program from July 2022 to June 2023 where they will be offered accommodation at Mary Thomson House for the duration of the residency.

Each year the Artist in Residence program aims to provide opportunities for the creative community to share knowledge, network and raise the profile of Albany as a creative city.

Manager Arts and Culture Paul Nielsen said inviting new artists into the Artist in Residence program provides new perspectives on our local community.
“We want to continue to invite diversity and variety into our creative community by facilitating non-residents to explore our region and express their own experiences and interpretations through their own artistic platform,” he said.

“The Great Southern is rich in history, culture and heritage which artists of varying disciplines can immerse themselves in, interpret and express in their own meaningful way.

“Artists in residence can choose a public outlet for their work from an exhibition, creative development showing, open studio, artist talk or skills workshop to showcase their time in the residency program.”

Criteria for selection includes artistic excellence, originality, timeliness, involvement of local community, engagement of local culture and history, multidisciplinary and diversity.

Applicants are required to provide a completed application cover sheet, curriculum vitae, examples of past work and a one-page proposal.
Applications will be open from 20 July, 2021 until 27 August 2021.

Interested applicants are encouraged to contact the City of Albany Arts and Culture team to discuss their project by emailing [email protected] or calling 6820 3740.
