Whether an environmental collapse, rising political nativism or a financial crash, preppers are ready for the worst and this new doomsday phenomenon is being exhibited at the Town Hall this month.
Preppers are a group of people who collect specialised gear, practice survival skills and hoard violent knowledge in the event that the world attempts to come to a drastic end at any moment.
Preppers is an ART ON THE MOVE touring exhibition featuring artists Tiyan Baker, Loren Kronemyer, Guy Louden, Dan McCabe and Thomas Yeomans, and includes sculptures, videos and installations.
City of Albany Manager Arts and Culture Paul Nielsen said the exhibition draws on consumer culture and actual experience within prepping communities.
“Prepping is a culture and activity which most of us haven’t been exposed to so events like this exhibition will open audience’s eyes into a new phenomenon and way of thinking,” he said.
“It will have an array of reactions from wonder to absurd and everything in between which is why we enjoy experiencing and learning about new concepts, cultures and ideologies that make us think”.
Artist Loren Kronemyer said Preppers is a show borne of conversation between the three curators about the possible futures they saw represented for themselves as millennials.
“For years we have collected and shared stories of billionaire bunkers, off-grid internet archives, Instagram-model gun hoarders, and other intersections of survivalism, capitalism, and digital culture, she said.
“We want to dissect the popular narratives of doomsday, questioning what survival and preparedness look like and for whom.”
Preppers is free to view at Albany Town Hall from 21 May – 26 June from 10am – 5pm Tuesday to Saturday.
