Lunar New Year Lantern Festival Workshop and Walk
5 February | Vancouver Arts Centre + Albany Town Hall
On Sunday February 5, 2023, artist Gok-Lim Finch invites locals to attend a lantern making workshop at the Vancouver Arts Centre, followed by a lantern walk at 7pm starting at the Albany Town Hall which coincides with the end of the Lunar New Year. Participants can register their interest via Facebook or through Eventbrite.
Attendees will be shown how to create a paper lantern, how to write a happy wish for the new year and be invited on a group evening walk with their illuminated lanterns. This workshop is FREE, and materials will be provided. If you wish to bring additional materials or anything else, please feel free!
The events mark the beginning of Gok-Lim’s creative research project, Offer Paper and Rice through the Activating Collections Artist in Residency Program with ART ON THE MOVE, hosted by The Museum of the Great Southern.
Gok-Lim’s project expands upon the stories of local Chinese settlers, uncovering details of their life, their loves, their work, their descendants, the debts that were owed them and the debts that they owe, and their contribution to the colony on unceded sovereign Noongar Boodja. Part ancestor worship and part community conversation, the residency will consist of dinners, performances, walkingtours, art workshops, singing, poetry, and history
